1. Professions:
- Talk about what children can do someday. Ask them to talk about it with their parents, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, and friends.
- Create a list of professions. This might be a starter list: teacher, doctor, veterinarian, dentist, firefighter, and police officer. As children mention other things people can be, add them to the list. Read the growing list again every day.
- Tell children they will see grown-ups at KinderCaminata who went to college to learn the special skills needed to be what they want to be.
2. Parents:
- Encourage parents to talk with their children about what professions they hope their children will pursue.
- Your school district requires written permission of the parent or guardian before a student is allowed to go on a field trip for KinderCaminata.
- Perhaps on the letter sent to parents requesting written permission, you can suggest that they discuss with their children their ambitions and what they might like to be when they grow up.
- Invite parents or adults from the family to accompany a KinderCaminata child from your class to participate in the event. However, minor siblings may not come.
3. Name Tags:
- Design and make "Name Tags" with children helping or decorating to the extent they can. Some examples are included in this packet.
- Thread colored yarn through reinforced holes punched in upper corners of each "Name Tag." On KinderCaminata morning, the "Name Tag" is worn in front around the child's neck.
- The color of the yarn and the design for each kindergarten's "Name Tags" helps with visual identification of that class as a group.
- The day before KinderCaminata, please print the name of the child and what that child might like to be someday on the child's "Name Tag."
4. Day of KinderCaminata:
- In talking with your students about their visit to college, tell them they are going to see the kind of school they can go to when they grow up. Just like their school, colleges are where you do things and learn how you can be what you want to be.
5. Follow up after KinderCaminata:
- After KinderCaminata, have the children tell you and their parents what they saw and did. Repeat the KinderCaminata message: You can become whatever you and your families hope for. School is the way.
